Jets DL Muhammad Wilkerson out Sunday due to 'coach's decision'

Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson celebrates a tackle against running back Tevin Coleman of the Atlanta Falcons at MetLife Stadium on October 29, 2017. But NJ Advance Media reported that Wilkerson was late for the Jets' team meeting on Friday morning.

The 2011 first-round pick out of Temple signed a five-year, $86 million contract with the Jets prior to the 2016 season, but per Mehta, they can cut him before the third day of the new league year in March to save $11 million and incur $9 million in dead money. When asked directly if he still considered Wilkerson a leader on his young team, Todd Bowles said, "Yes, he is".

Now we know a bit more about why head coach Todd Bowles is leaving Wilkerson behind.

"I'm just worrying about the guys I'm coaching". He said it was not injury related and he avoided referring to it as a suspension, since he may bring Wilkerson back for the final home game, December 24 versus the Chargers.

Initially, Bowles didn't say whether Wilkerson would play in the team's final two games, against the Chargers and Patriots, but later he said the benching was just for the Saints game.

Wilkerson, the highest paid player on the team, has been disciplined several times in his career with the Jets for various offenses. Last year, he famously missed a walkthrough that included a get-together in a defensive meeting room to celebrate his 27th birthday with a cake.

He broke his right leg at the end of that year, and it affected his play last season. "It's about the team, and we got a big challenge in front of us Sunday, and that's all we're going to be focused on".

"I made my decision", he said.

Now, thanks to Wilkerson showing up late to practice once again, he may have inadvertently forced the team's hand.

The only question now is if Wilkerson will play another game this season. "Tardiness continues to be an issue for him, and it now looks likelier that the Jets will decide to part ways with him after this season".
