Trump Signs New Space Policy Directive To Send Americans To Moon, Mars

US President Donald Trump directed NASA on Monday to send Americans to the Moon for the first time since 1972, in order to prepare for future trips to Mars.

The Commercial Spaceflight Federation - a member organization for human spaceflight companies - released this statement from its president, Eric Stallmer: "CSF applauds President Trump for signing Space Policy Directive 1, which directs NASA to partner with the us commercial space industry to return Americans to the Moon".

The Space Policy Directive 1, as it's called, is based on the first recommendation of the National Space Council, officials said.

"This time we will not only plant our flag and leave our footprint", Trump said at a White House ceremony as he signed the new space policy directive. It marks a first step in returning American astronauts to the moon for the first time since 1972...

Former US president George W. Bush also pledged to send Americans to the Moon as part of the Constellation program, which ran from 2005 to 2009. "We are the leader and we are going to stay the leader".

NASA recently announced that for human astronauts, the path to Mars will include a stop at the moon, where the agency may build a facility now being called the Deep Space Gateway.

Mr Trump also said the program would lay the foundation for an eventual mission to Mars, although he did not give a date for this.

NASA said initial funding for the new policy would be included in its budget request for fiscal year 2019.

"NASA looks forward to supporting the president's directive strategically aligning our work to return humans to the moon, travel to Mars and opening the deeper solar system beyond", said acting NASA Administrator Robert Lightfoot in a statement.

"Imagine the possibilities waiting in those big, attractive stars if we dare to dream big, and that's what our country is doing again".

Only 12 men have set foot on the Moon - all have been Americans.

"We will engage the best and brightest across government and private industry and our partners across the world to reach new milestones in human achievement".
