Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9 may have 512GB of storage

After Samsung announced its Exynos 9810, which would no doubt be found running in the upcoming flagship, the company is back with another announcement, which suggests that the smartphone could feature tons of internal storage.

Unlike iPhone and iPads, Samsung's phones and tablets do not offer as much built-in storage. Or will it appear in other manufacturers' phones, like how some iPhones used Samsung memory chips. And the faster the flash memory, the quicker the phone will feel. Samsung says the chip consists of eight 64-layer 512GB V-NAND chips, but what's interesting is that although it doubles the storage and density of Samsung's 256GB chip, it takes up the same amount of physical space.

"The new Samsung 512GB eUFS provides the best embedded storage solution for next-generation premium smartphones", said Jaesoo Han, executive vice president of Memory Sales & Marketing at Samsung Electronics.

With so much next-generation storage potentially on board the S9, presumably there's no need for a microSD port to add even more - it's a big step up from 64GB and even 128GB, and means we're unlikely to see the same kind of outcry as there was when the microSD card slot was pulled from the Galaxy S6. There is a Galaxy Note 8 model with 256GB of internal storage, but it's harder to find, and a lot more expensive. Android benefits from the ability to install an external memory card in most devices to provide additional storage but that could be a thing of the past thanks to the internal storage capacity in Samsungs new chip hitting 512GB.

For ultra-premium flagship devices, Samsung is expected to rapidly increase production for its 64-layer 512Gb V-NAND chips, and expand its 256Gb V-NAND production. The 512GB chip is able to read and write new data at 860MB per second and 255MB per second respectively, which Samsung claims is eight times faster than your average MicroSD card. Let's just hope the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 are included on that list.
