Disappointment in Franken's speech from advocates, accusers

Kristen Gillibrand, called on Franken to resign after the new allegations surfaced. "I know there has been a very different picture of me painted over the last few weeks, but I know who I really am".

Dupuy told CNN's Alisyn Camerota that Franken's speech and the venue where he delivered it were inappropriate. "But this decision is not about me, it's about the people of Minnesota and it has become clear that I can't both pursue the ethics committee process and at the same time remain an effective senator for them".

Democratic senators have come out in droves urging Franken resign, including several high-ranking female lawmakers. There's more I want to say, but the first and most important thing-and if it's the only thing you care to hear, that's fine - is: "I'm sorry", the senator said in a statement.

Franken still has not appeared in the public eye.

Menz accused Franken of groping her while posing for a photo together at the Minnesota State Fair in 2010.

A national conversation about sexual harassment has intensified this fall after the heavily publicized case of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who was accused of many acts of sexual misconduct, including rape, by actresses and other women.

Franken returns to work and says he knows he "let a lot of people down". Just on Wednesday, Time magazine named as its person of the year the "silence breakers" - women who have come forward on sexual harassment.

Army veteran Stephanie Kemplin, who accused Franken of groping her at a 2003 USO tour photo shoot, told CNN Franken's speech on the Senate floor was "very hurtful". "It said, 'You don't matter-and I do.' He wanted to cop a feel and he demonstrated he didn't need my permission". According to Politico, the woman, a former Democratic congressional aide, said Franken tried to kiss her after a taping of his radio show in 2006. Within an hour, his office released a statement saying: "Senator Franken will be making an announcement tomorrow".

Noting seven other women subsequently came forward with allegations of Franken's misconduct, Tweeden said it is "between those women and God, who's lying". He immediately put his hand on my waist, grabbing a handful of flesh.

"I think it's a good thing (he resigned), with all the allegations against him", added another woman.

"I know that I am going to have to be much more conscious when in these circumstances", he went on, "much more careful, much more sensitive, and that this will not happen again".
