Reject concealed-carry gun law expansion

"The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act will protect the rights of law-abiding gun owners and allow those qualified to carry a concealed firearm to do so in any state that allows it". "They're going to be a million people here in about three weeks, and that would be perfectly legal even if it was against NY state law". But advocates for changing the law say that it eliminates criminal penalties for law-abiding citizens who travel out of state and are unaware that concealed carry permits do not transfer across state lines.

This is not hyperbolic.

The House has approved a Republican bill making it easier for gun owners to legally carry concealed weapons across state lines. The bill was backed by the National Rifle Association, which called passage of the legislation "the most far-reaching expansion of self-defense rights in modern American history". In other words, it treats a concealed permit like a driver's license, ensuring that law-abiding citizens are armed so they can defend themselves and their families when criminals and/or terrorists attack.

Kansas doesn't require a permit to carry concealed, so other states' permit standards wouldn't apply to Kansans traveling there. Please include your name, town and phone number, for confirmation purposes.

Many law enforcement organizations have decried the bill, including, the International Association of Chiefs of Police; the Police Foundation; the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators; and the Major Cities Chiefs Association, which counts the chiefs of police and sheriffs of the 66 largest law-enforcement agencies in the country amongst its members. "The irony is not lost on me; this bill epitomizes federal overreach and undermines states' rights to regulate firearms - especially in states like New Jersey who have made tremendous progress to limit the proliferation of guns", she said.

The bill passed in a 231-198 vote, with six Democrats supporting it. Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) said, "The Bill of Rights is not a philosophical exercise".

Just months after the nation's deadliest mass shooting in Las Vegas, the House passed a bill that would expand gun rights.

There is a bill that is backed broadly in the House and has enough Senate Republican support to beat a filibuster.

This new legislation will only make things worse because, as Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., D-Paterson, said, "The bill opens up law enforcement to the threat of personal litigation if an officer mistakenly questions a person's legal authority to carry a concealed firearm".

Canelli cited the gun violence in Hudson experienced over the summer, and the several shootings that took place, to argue firearms are not the problem. A Pew survey released in June found 81% of us oppose allowing people to carry concealed weapons without a permit. Giffords was the victim of a shooting in 2011. It now goes to the Senate.
