Arizona Congressman Will Resign In January Amid Sexual Harassment Investigation

Shortly after the news broke, the House Intelligence Committee announced that it will investigate whether Franks engaged in "conduct that constitutes sexual harassment and/or retaliation for opposing sexual harassment".

He says his resignation will take effect January 31.

Franks said in his statement that the investigation concerns his "discussion of surrogacy with two previous female subordinates, making each feel uncomfortable".

A spokesman for Franks would not comment on whether the congressman offered aides money in exchange to act as surrogates.

In his statement, Franks said he never "physically intimidated, coerced, or had, or attempted to have, any sexual contact with any member of my congressional staff".

Franks says he deeply regrets "that my discussion of this option and process in the workplace caused distress".

The 60-year-old lawmaker also said that he and his wife "have long struggled with infertility".

Franks said he is coming under investigation for talking to two former female staffers of his about being surrogates for his children.

Franks' expected resignation was initially reported by Roll Call.

Franks' resignation came on the same day Democratic Senator Al Franken (MN) reluctantly resigned from his job, bowing to allegations of sexual misconduct from several women. Greene filed suit through the formal complaint process with Congress' Office of Compliance.

Franks, an abortion opponent, drew a sharp response from Democrats during a 2013 House committee debate when he said, "The incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low".

"We're trying to get that done before the holidays, over the next few weeks", Alderman said.

"I'll let the statement speak for itself", he said off the House floor.

The exact reason for Franks's resignation is unknown, but the congressman indicated he would later release a statement explaining his decision.

Franks is a conservative member of the House Freedom Caucus who has made his crusade against abortion a cornerstone of his career.

He considered a run for Senate in 2012 but dropped out suddenly. He serves on the House Judiciary and Armed Services committees.

"If this turns out to be true, there won't be that many people who are surprised", the Arizona Republican said, according to the report.

The deep-red 8th District, northwest of Phoenix, supported President Donald Trump by 21 points in 2016, according to calculations by Daily Kos Elections.
