Trump Calls On Saudis To Immediately Lift Blockade Of Yemen

The commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said Yemen's enemies had been behind Saleh's armed uprising and praised what he called the Houthis' swift quashing of the "coup against the holy warriors", the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Yemen's stalemated war has killed over 10,000 civilians and displaced 3 million.

"There is no God but God and the martyr is a friend of God", they shouted in front of the Saleh mosque, the largest in the capital and named for the former president.

There are expectations in Yemen that Maj Gen Saleh will now return to Yemen to lead a battle against the Houthis to take revenge for the killing of his father.

Saleh's slaying likely gives the rebels the upper hand in the clashes in Sanaa, which ended after his death, while also dashing the hopes of Yemen's Saudi-backed government that the former president's recent split with the Iranian-allied Houthis would have weakened them.

Iran, which supports the Houthis but denies arming them, welcomed Saleh's killing, saying it had put an end to a Saudi conspiracy.

Air raids also struck northern provinces including Taiz, Haja, Midi and Saada, the rebel-owned channel said, although there was no immediate word on casualties.

Zeid said its creation "is an important step toward accountability and ending impunity for the serious violations of human rights committed by all sides in Yemen amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the country, and ensuring justice and remedy for the victims".

Jamie McGoldrick, of United Nations aid agency OCHA, said civilians in Sanaa are "emerging from their houses after five days being locked down, basically prisoners", to seek safety, medical care, fresh water and other survival needs. McGoldrick spoke to reporters in Geneva by phone on Tuesday from the Yemeni capital.

The rebel alliance splintered last week, setting off heavy clashes between the Houthis and Saleh's forces.

It's not clear how many civilians are among the dead. Now his exiled son Ali Ahmed Saleh has vowed to lead anti-Houthi Movement and it is to be seen to what extent he succeeds in winning back the family's influence in shaping the destiny of the country.

Steve Purbrick, MSF's coordinator in Hajja, described the attack as a "deliberate disregard for medical facilities" that endangered the lives of patients and medical staff, and compromised "the care MSF can provide in the midst of intense fighting".

At least 13 other journalists and media workers are now held hostage in Yemen by armed groups, including the Houthis and al-Qaeda.

There was no independent confirmation, but pictures circulated on social media appeared to show Mr Saleh's body.

In other areas like Fag Attan, Saleh's forces are still surrounded by Houthis. That helped propel Yemen into the ruinous civil war that has spread hunger and disease among its 28 million people.
