Homicide investigation underway following disappearance of NC 3-year-old

Authorities said Saturday afternoon it was with "deep sadness" that they believed a missing 3-year-old North Carolina girl was dead.

Earlier in the day, agents were seen searching the trailer where Mariah lived with her 29-year-old mother Kristy, her older brothers and Kimrey.

The sheriff's office says the search for Mariah is now a recovery process. Kimrey, who was in the Onslow County Detention Center on a $1 million bond, faces charges of concealing a death, obstruction of justice, second-degree burglary, larceny and possession of stolen property.

Kimrey is now being held in the Onslow County Detention Center with bail set at $1,010,000.

Investigators said evidence gathered during the course of the investigation indicates Mariah is deceased.

Since then, professional investigators and volunteers have fanned out across the woods near her home, neighbors have been asked to search their property and a dive team has searched a portion of Southwest Creek under U.S. Highway 17. She told police that she went to her room again Monday morning after 6 a.m., and she was gone.

On Thursday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said "items of interest" were taken to Marine Corps Base Quantico, outside Washington, D.C., for testing.

Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller said at a news conference that deputies are just as determined to bring the girl home as they were when it was still possible she was alive.

Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller talked during a news conference about Mariah Woods, who vanished November 27 from her home on High Hill Road.

Mariah's father, who has been involved in a custody dispute with her mother, has criticized her version of events. Once they realized she was missing, the couple said they called authorities. "Someone just walked right up in there, grabbed the 3-year-old out of the bed and she didn't cry, she didn't scream?" "She's my baby. She's my everything".

"The focus of this investigation has changed from a missing child to homicide case", Meador added.
