Patent Infringement: Qualcomm Files Three Complaints Against Apple

Qualcomm provided the three filings to The Register and said they pertain to "a total of 16 additional patents that Apple is now using in its iPhones".

Apple hasn't commented on Qualcomm's latest move but said in its filing on Wednesday: "Apple's iPhone is the reason consumers fell in love with smartphones and this continues to push Apple to create and innovate with new products and technologies, such as iPhone X Face ID". Apple then filed a lawsuit making similar accusations and continued to make those claims in courts around the world.

Earlier today we heard that Apple were suing Qualcomm for patents its owns related to two of Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors.

Qualcomm alleged the infringement took place in a range of Apple devices.

Other alleged patent violations include the functionality to respond to a call with a text instead of answering, the ability to refocus the camera by tapping on the screen and the idea to drag multiple uses out of the power button including ending a call.

Embattled Qualcomm is also facing a daily fine of €580,000 for withholding information from European Union antitrust regulators. Qualcomm alleges that Apple's infringed it since iOS 7 debuted in 2013. Qualcomm has demanded a court trial and an injunction on the infringing devices including the iPhone X, iPhone 8 series, and the iPhone 7 series in the US.

In its filing, Apple alleges that Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 and 820 processors, which power phones from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Alphabet Inc's Google's Pixel phones, infringe on those patents.

Coming back to the latest lawsuit, Qualcomm's claims that Apple violates patents related to memory design, power management, RF transceivers, etc.

In better news for Apple, Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says the iPhone X will lead to a longer "super cycle" and the company "may be increasingly well positioned to experience a strong multi-year iPhone trajectory".

According to Rosenblatt Securities analysts, the iPhone X sold in record numbers during the Black Friday shopping weekend. That's a huge number considering the device has been around for only about three weeks, was facing supply issues, and is the most expensive iPhone ever.
