12 injured as terrorists open fire near Peshawar University

Police Chief Salahuddin Mahsud of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province said attackers opened fire on the main gate of the campus of an agricultural college, initially wounding two guards and two students.

Police and army troops summoned to the scene on December 1 killed all of the attackers at the Directorate of Agriculture Institute in the city of Peshawar some two hours into the attack, the military's press service said.

"Our mujahids have attacked the building because it was used as office for ISI, God willing our fighters will fight till the last drop of blood", he said, referring to Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence agency.

The area where the incident occurred is a hub for educational institutions in the city including the University of Peshawar.

There were about 20 people including the students in the University as it had remained closed today due to Eid Miladun Nabi. Five people were wounded and were taken to hospital.

Shehzad Akbar, medical director of Hayatabad Medical Complex, said six people died of their wounds and 18 were being treated.

A senior police official said all the terrorists were killed by security forces.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

The injured include a police sub-inspector and a constable.

"I was sleeping in my room with my other colleagues", said student Zulfiqar Ahmad.

An interior ministry official told AFP that cellular networks have been suspended in various cities across the country for security reasons. In 2014, Pakistani Taliban gunmen murdered more than 140 children in Peshawar, according to the BBC, making it one of the deadliest attack in the country's history.
