Netanyahu: Israel seeks to join African Union

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the opening of a new embassy in Rwanda as part of an "expanding presence" in Africa.

Netanyahu has previously announced on more than one occasion since past year, and even during his visit to Africa, that he is trying to establish a closer relationship with the continent to cut with the instinctive sympathy for Palestine in worldwide institutions in which Palestinians are supported. Pointing out that this will be his third visit to Africa in 18 months, Netanyahu said: "This tells you about the importance that we in Israel attribute to Africa, and no less importantly, the importance Africa places on strengthening ties with Israel".

Netanyahu is in Kenya to attend the inauguration of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Over the past two years, legations from four African countries have been opened in Israel.

Netanyahu spoke of Israel's desire to see Africa progress and achieve its development goals, promising his government's assistance in providing the necessary technology. So for every, every one of your initiatives, there will be an initiative on our part to seize the future, to make life better and safer for your people. "And I hope that we will find a way to help Israel become an observer of the African Union because we can help- we cannot only watch, but we can help build a better future for Africa together". "If we work together we will defeat the barbarians". In addition to meeting with Kagame, Netanyahu has also met with the leaders of Kenya, Gabon, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, South Sudan, Botswana, Namibia and Ethiopia. "Our people deserve better, we can provide it for them", he added.

In his address to AIPAC last March, Netanyahu observed that Israel has "diplomatic relations with 161 countries, more than at any time in our history".

Seeking to deport African migrants who have arrived in Israel, Netanyahu's government has also signed deals with Rwanda and Uganda to accept departing migrants on condition they consent to the arrangement.
