Trump makes 'Pocahontas' joke as ceremony honouring Native American veterans

Trump's use of the name "Pocahontas" at a White House event honoring Navajo veterans was not a racial slur, a prominent white expert said on Monday. When anchor Alisyn Camerota asked whether it amounted to an ethnic slur, he said yes.

President Donald Trump (R) greets members of the Native American code talkers during an event in the Oval Office of the White House, on November 27, 2017 in Washington, DC.

The National Congress of American Indians "cannot and will not stand silent when our Native ancestors, cultures and histories are used in a derogatory manner for political gain", said its executive director, Jacqueline Pata.

She told the Associated Press in 2012 that her parents told her (and her siblings) that they had Native American heritage.

"I think what most people find offensive is Senator Warren lying about her heritage to advance her career", said Sarah Sanders, the White House press secretary on Monday.

Keel also called on the president to refrain from invoking Pocahontas in a way that "denigrates the legacy" of the 17th century Pamunkey woman, born Matoaka, who is credited with helping foster relations between Virginia tribes and early British colonizers.

How does Donald Trump keep finding new ways to embarrass the nation? "They call her Pocahontas", he continued.

Warren said Tuesday that all Trump "had to do was make it through the ceremony".

Instead, the comments have drawn the wrath of one Indigenous organisation and Senator Warren has accused the President of making a racial slur.

"If some Native Americans were offended by the use of this term, I'm sorry that they're so wrong", the expert said. "It hadn't worked in the past, it is not gonna work in the future". You are really incredible people. "I like you - you are special people".

Genealogist Chris Child of the New England Historic Society looked into Warren's background and found a document stating that she has a great-great-great-grandmother who is Native American, which would make her 1/32 Cherokee, NPR reported.
