Senior Fatah official: Iran the key source of Palestinian division

A senior Egyptian security delegation arrived in the Gaza Strip on Monday to observe the implementation of an internal Palestinian reconciliation agreement reached in Cairo in light of some difficulties cited by Fatah officials regarding the empowerment of the government in Gaza, the take over of security bodies and the disarming of Hamas militants.

Masked Palestinian gunmen from the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, a military wing of Hamas, commemorate the 29th anniversary of their group, in Gaza City, Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016.

The Palestinian Authority's minister of civil affairs said Sunday that Hamas is dragging its feet in ceding control of the Gaza Strip, with the PA having assumed authority over only 5 percent of affairs just days ahead of a looming December 1 deadline to hand over power.

The Palestinian Authority-affiliated employees quit their positions in 2007 upon orders from President Mahmud Abbas in protest of Hamas' takeover of Gaza.

Delegation members hope to follow up on the implementation of an Egypt-sponsored Palestinian reconciliation agreement signed last month in Cairo, a Palestinian security source told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity due to the issue's sensitivity.

Rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah signed an agreement on October 12 to end a decade-long split following talks mediated by Egypt in Cairo, with President Abbas calling it a final accord.

Despite the reconciliation talks, Hamas has reportedly declined to give up its weapons and vowed to continue terrorist activity against Israel also from the West Bank.

Although the border crossings were officially transferred to the PA on November 1, effective control has been impeded by lack of security, and the crossing have been mostly closed since then. He added, "These weapons will clearly move to the West Bank to battle the (Israeli) occupation there".
