Schumer, Pelosi Say They Won't Attend 'Show Meeting' With Trump

The Democratic leaders Democratic leaders have cancelled a meeting with President Donald Trump after the latter attacked them on Twitter.

President Trump makes a statement from the Roosevelt Room next to the empty chairs of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., after they cancelled their meeting at the White House in Washington, D.C., on November 28, 2017.

"Given that the president doesn't see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead", Schumer and Pelosi said in a statement.

With government funding scheduled to dry up on December 8, both sides have floated the possibility of passing a short-term plan that would push negotiations until just before Christmas.

"It is regretful that our Democratic colleagues in leadership chose not to come [Tuesday]", Speaker Ryan said.

"We don't have any time to waste in addressing the issues that confront us, so we're going to continue to negotiate with Republican leaders who may be interested in reaching a bipartisan agreement", the pair said in the statement.

Sen. McConnell added he has "never seen someone turn down an invitation to the White House".

Discussing a potential government shutdown, Trump said, "If that happens, I would absolutely blame the Democrats if it happens it's going to be over illegals pouring into the country, crime pouring into the country, no border wall, which everybody wants". "There is a meeting at the White House this afternoon, and if Democrats want to reach an agreement, they will be there".

Now, the immediate question is whether negotiations can get back on track. If a new budget and spending plan is not passed by then, the government will shut down.

A day of political drama underscored the intense year-end maneuvering as Trump and Republicans chase long-awaited political victories after a tumultuous 10 months since his inauguration and Democrats seek to leverage their own top issues. Hurricane aid weighs in the balance and Democrats are pressing for legislative protections for immigrants known as "Dreamers", even as conservative Republicans object to including the issue in the crush of year-end business.

Previewing the meeting on Monday, Schumer cited spending levels, immigration policy and the need to renew programs such as the Children's Health Insurance Program as top priorities in the closing days of the year. I think that will have a huge effect on Schumer and Pelosi.
