Meghan Markle has met Prince George and Princess Charlotte at Kensington Palace

Britain's royal family announced earlier on Monday that the one-time playboy royal would marry his American actress girlfriend early next year, confirming months of speculation.

Mr Knauf said the couple, who were grateful for the warm wishes from the public, would be putting their stamp on their wedding day.

Kensington Palace said that Windsor Castle, a royal residence west of London, had become "a special place" for the couple.

Prince Harry and Ms Markle will start their visit at the National Justice Museum, followed by a walkabout, considered a Royal rite of passage for the new family member, and then a visit to Nottingham Contemporary.

Ms Markle, a Protestant, is to be baptised and confirmed before the wedding day. She will join Prince William, Kate and Prince Harry's royal foundation as its fourth patron, and work with her husband to support causes close to her heart.

The exact date has not yet been revealed. "Prince Harry and Ms Markle are delighted that the attractive grounds of Windsor Castle will be where they begin their lives together as a married couple".

In 2005, the monarch attended the religious blessing of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall - both divorcees - in St George's, but did not go to their civil ceremony beforehand in the Windsor Guildhall.

St George's Chapel. Formal but not too formal. Presumably, then, Prince Harry and Markle won't shy from live coverage, or at least video footage of the the ceremony, which Harry's spokesperson promised "will be a moment of fun and joy".

In Nottingham, the pair will visit the Nottingham Contemporary which is hosting a Terrence Higgins Trust World Aids Day charity fair, and also visit Nottingham Academy to meet headteachers taking part in the Full Effect programme. "They also want the day to be shaped so as to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations too and are now working through ideas for how this might be achieved".

The bride-to-be will also become a United Kingdom citizen but the process could take a number of years.
