CS Sicily Kariuki launches campaign against gender violence

He called on men to speak up on women's rights, stand against violence and promote female leadership in all aspects of society.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisah Djaba, said in a statement that the campaign would continue to contribute to a world free from gender-based violence especially for women and girls.

Unions around the world are engaged in education campaigns with their membership, in getting collective bargaining provisions which protect women from violence and provide paid leave for women who have suffered from violence and harassment, and in broader community campaigns to eradicate violence against women and girls. The day aims at bringing awareness about the violence against women and highlight the need to report it. Women around the world are subject to domestic violence, rape, physical torture and other forms of violence. To achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, more vigorous efforts are required, including legal frameworks, to counter deeply rooted gender-based discrimination that often results from patriarchal attitudes and related social norms.

According to womenhomicide.com data, 260 women were murdered by their male partners, husbands or family members past year across Turkey.

The document, "Strengthening health systems to respond to women subjected to intimate partner violence or sexual violence: A manual for health managers" builds on other tools to help health care systems provide compassionate and effective services to survivors that address the consequences of violence and help reduce its recurrence.

She said despite facing many difficulties, women in rural areas like urban areas women knew their rights. We are also grateful to Ontario's Roundtable on Violence Against Women and the Executive and Provincial Committees to End Violence Against Indigenous Women for their invaluable and ongoing advice.

Yet despite its pervasiveness, violence against women is not inevitable - and it is preventable.

The UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign invites you to "Orange the world", using the colour designated by the campaign to symbolize a brighter future without violence.
