Robinho speaks out after ex-Man City star 'jailed for sexual assault'

A Milan court on Thursday sentenced former AC Milan and Brazil forward Robinho aka Robson de Souza Santos to nine years in jail for gang raping a 22-year-old Albanian woman in a Milan disco on January 22 2013.

Robinho, whose full name is Robson de Souza, is now in his native Brazil, where he plays for Atletico Mineiro, which are based in Belo Horizonte.

The forward, who has been capped 100 times by Brazil, returned to his home country past year to join Atletico Mineiro from Guangzhou Evergrande.

A statement posted on his Instagram from his legal team said: "Regarding the news involving the striker Robinho, in an incident that occurred several years ago, we wish to clarify that he already declared his innocence and maintained he had no involvement whatsoever".

Under Italian law he won't be sentenced until the appeals process has been finalised - which could take years.

"All legal provisions are being taken on this first decision". However, Brazil does not allow for the extradition of its own citizens, meaning he would only risk arrest and deportation if he was stopped in a third country.

However, Marisa Alija Ramos, Robinho's agent and lawyer, insisted that the former Real Madrid and Manchester City star is innocent. After a brief stay at Chinese team, Guangzhou Evergrande, he joined Atletico Mineiro previous year.

Robinho moved to Europe amid much hype in 2005 when he joined Real Madrid from Santos.
