Alcohol spirits like gin, rum are mood dampners; beer, wine help relax

Probably the most likely thing that will happen is you'll relax a bit (32.67 percent) - although not as much as you would if you drink red wine instead. A new study into drinking and emotions found that spirits are most likely to trigger tearfulness when compared to wine and beer.

Drinking spirits was also more likely to induce negative feelings than any other type of alcohol. Conversely, though, you might also get sleepy or a little low-energy from a red wine tipple; tiredness has a whopping 60.08 percentage, while feeling energized only rates as 7.14 percent. Red wine was most strongly associated with feeling relaxed, but also exhausted.

In a survey of almost 30,000 young adults from 21 countries, 59 per cent said spirits boosted their energy and confidence, while 43 per cent associated the tipple with sexiness. Additionally, only 2.57 percent reported feeling aggressive after drinking red wine, and only 5.18 percent reported feeling restless. "This global study suggests even today consuming spirits is more likely to result in feelings of aggression than other drinks", said study co-author Professor Mark Bellis of Public Health Wales' Director of Policy, Research and International Development.

Bellis said that it makes sense that different types of drinks would work differently on the brain and emotions, given how alcohol levels vary. "This can result in a quicker stimulating effect as blood alcohol levels increase", Bellis was quoted as saying by "The Telegraph".

It asked people about the emotions they experienced while drinking one of four types of alcohol.

ResearchGate: What motivated you to study differences in emotional responses to different types of alcohol? .

Confidence and sexiness make up the middle ground here; 27.88 percent reported feeling confident and 25.20 percent reported feeling sexy.

A survey of 29 thousand people showed that the sensation from taking alcohol doses in people are similar no matter what country you live respondents, their religious or cultural identification. Rum, Vodka and Gin were strongly associated with feelings of aggression, illness, sadness and restlessness. But men were significantly more likely to associate feelings of aggression with all types of alcohol, as were those categorised as heavy or dependent drinkers, who were six times more likely to do so than low risk drinkers.

It is worth also bearing in mind that there are compounds apart from alcohol in different drinks. The exception was aggression, which was more commonly reported by men (36.97% of men compared to 31.27% of women).

Around a third of drinkers studied said they felt aggressive when drinking spirits, but over half said vodka, whisky, brandy and other hard drinks made them feel more confident. But it's important not to let the myths get in the way of the facts.

It also suggested that the likelihood of a person feeling aggressive after drinking was increased among people who had a higher dependancy on alcohol. So manage to solve the problem of increasing the number of people with alcohol dependence and the level of violence in society, he added.
