Uber admits hiding a giant hack affecting 57 million people

Uber admitted Tuesday to covering up a massive cyberattack by paying hackers $100,000 so they wouldn't reveal that they had stolen sensitive information from 57 million customer and driver accounts.

You read that right, Uber got hacked and your personal information with it.

In late 2016, people's data was compromised including names, email addresses and phone numbers, the company said tonight. The personal information of about 7 million drivers was accessed as well, including some 600,000 USA driver's license numbers. He was not at the helm when it happened. Cybersecurity experts said Uber's payment to the two hackers in exchange for their discretion and assurances that they delete the data was very unusual.

They did not say, however, how hackers assured the company the stolen data was destroyed.

Bloomberg News first reported the data breach yesterday.

"Given the current climate around data security and breaches it is astonishing that Uber paid off the hackers and kept this breach under wraps for a year", said David Kennerley, director of threat research at Webroot. Kalanick, the company's co-founder, was ousted as CEO in June after a string of scandals and controversies, including allegations of sexual harassment and technology theft. The ride-share network has come under fire in the past year for various things, including breaking Apple's terms of use in order to "spy" on users. "This data is nearly never monitored or secured, and as we can see here, it is often stored in various locations and is often easily accessed by nefarious actors", says Terry Ray, CTO of data protection company Imperva.

The New York Attorney General's Office has also opened an investigation into the breach.

Uber is also being investigated in the United Kingdom for the data breach, because the island nation is the largest Uber user in Europe. The company is providing these drivers with free credit monitoring and identity theft protection.

Khosrowshahi claimed that he, like everyone else, had the question why the company was "just talking about this now", said he had asked for a thorough investigation of what happened and how they handled it, as well as prompted several actions.

A GitHub spokeswoman said the hack was not the result of a failure of GitHub's security. "We also implemented security measures to restrict access to and strengthen controls on our cloud-based storage accounts".

Khosrowshahi says "two of the individuals who led the response to this incident are no longer with the company". "We are changing the way we do business".
