Owning dog linked to lower risk of dying earlier

Owning a dog might be helping people live longer and lead healthier lives, a new study finds.

"Dog ownership is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in single households and with a reduced risk of cardiovascular and all-cause death in the general population", the study concludes.

For people living alone, owning a dog can decrease their risk of death by 33% and their risk of cardiovascular related death by 36%, when compared to single individuals without a pet, according to the study. The study, done at the Uppsala University in Sweden, says that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world and having a canine companion will reduce the risk of having the disease since dogs provide a form of non-human support - especially for the elderly and single people. They were also 11% less likely to have a heart attack, an effect that is not shown among people who live with others and is nearly certainly attributable to our children's leftover french fries. Risk of death among these dog owners fell by 11% and their chances of cardiovascular death were 15% lower.

Fall and co-authors drew from a nation-wide register of more than 3.4 million Swedish adults between 40 and 80 years old for their trial. As a result, the researchers posit, dog owners went out more and had added more social interaction than those without dogs. Other reasons might involve an increased well-being and social contacts or effects of the dog on the bacterial microbiome in the owner.

No matter the breed, though, Fall and co-authors wrote dogs are repeatedly proven to have a positive health effect on those living with them.

While Bond may not prescribe a dog as treatment for a patient, she said that she will not discourage owning or buying one, or expressing the benefits of owning one. The participants were followed for more than a decade, and 13.1 percent were dog owners at any given time during the study period. That would be a tough study to pull off since you would have to take a random set of people, give some of them dogs, and see who died first. "Although careful attention was paid to adjusting for potential confounders in a set of sensitivity analyses, it is still possible that personal characteristics that we did not have information about affect the choice of not only acquiring a dog, but also the breed and the risk of CVD".

Scientists said the companionship was key, along with the physical activity in taking it for a walk.
