Mattel has created the first ever Barbie who wears a hijab

"Through playing with Barbie, I was able to imagine and dream about who I could become", said Ibtihaj Muhammad. She also became the first Muslim American woman to win an Olympic medal.

There has never been a Barbie doll to wear a hijab before.

The doll is modeled after American fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, who became the first American Olympian to compete in a traditional Muslim headscarf during the 2018 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The doll was released as part of the Sheroes series, which is dedicated to women, who inspire girls and "expand boundaries" of opportunities around the world.

"I'm excited to just partner with a brand that I know honours powerful women who are breaking barriers and whose sole goal is to impact the future leaders of tomorrow", Muhammad told PeopleStyle on Monday.

The Barbie "Shero" line includes dolls inspired by director Ava DuVernay, actress Zendaya and gymnast Gabby Douglas.

Growing up in New Jersey, the Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad used to fashion tiny hijabs out of tissues to wrap around the heads of her Barbie dolls so they'd look more like her and her sisters.

"I had so many moments as an athlete, where I didn't feel included, where I was often in spaces where there was a lack of representation", Muhammad said Monday night at the Glamour Women of the Year gala in NY. "To be included in this conversation is very humbling and I'm over the moon about this whole thing". Mattel is working hard to have dolls that represent different races, religions, body types, and more. "I wanted (the Barbie) to have athletic toned legs for sure. I'm also really big into eyeliner", she said.

For Muhammad, it was not only important for the doll to have her hijab, but also for it to share her likeness and have her body type. "Ideal hijab moment right here-this is wonderful", she exclaimed. "I feel like we're just shattering all the little glass ceilings here".
