Sixteen killed after boat capsizes in Vijayawada

Most of the passengers were said to be members of the Ongole Walkers Club in Prakasam district while some were from Nellore who were on a visit to Vijayawada.

The Police said 38 people, who were on picnic party on the occasion of Karthika Masam, boarded a boat, being operated by a private company.

"As the boat took a turn near the Ferry Ghat, the tourists came to one side to witness the evening "aarti" to the "Sangamam", immediately the boat turned turtle".

"So far, 16 bodies have been recovered from river".

"We received information five minutes after the incident occurred and local fishermen and boatmen had already rescued a few people".

Earlier this year, 13 people died in a similar incident in the state's Anantapur district.

But the local people alleged that several boats do not have sufficient number of life jackets and carry more passengers than their actual capacity. According to IANS, there were 38 tourists on the boat belonging to a private operator.

The state's tourism minister ordered an inquiry into the incident while Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed his condolences on Twitter.

Director general of police N Sambasiva Rao, Krishna district collector Lakshmi Kantham and the other senior officials of the district administration are personally supervising the rescue operations.
