Odd-even scheme to be back? NGT to decide today

Giving nod to the Odd-Even scheme considering the severe air pollution levels, the NGT directed "no exemption" for two wheelers, government servants, VIPs or women. The information was tweeted by Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot.

The Delhi government on Friday announced free service in all Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses, as well as cluster buses, for all commuters during the Odd-Even scheme, which will kick off on November 13 and continue till November 17.

The Indian capital has made bus rides free to encourage people to use public transport when the odd-even vehicle rationing scheme kicks off next week in the wake of high pollution levels in the city.

"At the moment we are calling it off".

Arvind Kejriwal government has withdrawn its decision to implement odd-even rule from Monday after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) refused to grant an exemption to two-wheelers and women. However, some women agreed that it was high time the government took drastic steps to combat the poor air and said they didn't have a problem with leaving their auto at home.

The NGT also asked the city government to reconsider the four-time hike in the parking fee.

The tribunal on Friday said the scheme was a "farce", and that it can not be implemented from next week without its permission. The Delhi cabinet went into a huddle and reached a consensus that given the load it would put on Delhi's transport system and pose a threat to women's security, it would not be feasible to go ahead , As Reported By TOI. It also asked the Delhi government to explain why women and two-wheelers have been exempted from the odd-even scheme.

"The situation in the capital is improving". We have taken all people concerned on board, which includes chief ministers of neighbouring states.

"Further, this government feels that considering the large number of two-wheelers in Delhi, unless adequate number of buses are available, implementation of odd-even will cause great hardship to such persons". I do not think that the odd-even plan is necessary.

The scheme is being rolled out under a Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) given by the Supreme Court-mandated Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA).
