Twitter pauses future account verification to fix 'busted' system

After facing swift backlash for temporarily locking the account of Harvey Weinstein accuser Rose McGowan last month, Twitter C.E.O. "We have created this confusion". And among users, the blue checkmark has become a sort of status symbol that implies legitimacy-many are more likely to trust a verified account simply due to its verified status. "I must be the only working class white advocate with that distinction". Kessler disparaged the slain woman on Twitter as a "fat, disgusting Communist" and called her murder "payback time".

Kessler's verification spawned an uproar among Twitter users, as it was seen as the company's endorsement of Kessler's beliefs. The whole process is on hold until the company figures out exactly what its own blue check mark is all about. Kessler, the Charlottesville rally organizer, received official Twitter verification on Tuesday, according to a report by the Daily Beast. As a result, verification was naturally a much more exclusive club, typically requiring a much larger presence than might be necessary to qualify now, perhaps contributing to the perception that verified accounts must have been deemed "important" by Twitter. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey apologized for the situation, adding "We should've communicated faster on this (yesterday)" and noting that "we realized some time ago the system is broken and needs to be reconsidered".

In response to this latest gaffe, Twitter announced that it would immediately suspend its verification process, which Dorsey described as "broken".

The company says the suspension is only temporary, and that it is working on a fix.

The decision comes days after Twitter authenticated an account belonging to the man who organized this summer's white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Ed Ho, the head of Twitter's Consumer Product and Engineering Group, tweeted that the social network should have stopped the process at the start of the year.
