Luther Strange: Moore allegations are 'very, very, disturbing'

Leigh Corfman and three other women say Mr Moore made sexual advances on them when they were between the ages of 14 and 18, the Washington Post reports. One of the women was 14 when Moore met her, and another said they went on dates that never went beyond "kissing". But since the report's publication, more than a dozen Republican lawmakers have called on Moore to drop out of his Senate race, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Republican Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado says, "The allegations against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore are deeply troubling".

Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama said "If that's true", referring to the allegations, "then he wouldn't belong in the Senate".

For the full story, see The Washington Post. The age of consent is 16 in Alabama and has been since 1920.

Mr. Moore's candidacy had already anxious party leaders who had embraced the controversial former state Supreme Court justice despite his long record of incendiary comments about gays, Muslims and African-Americans, to protect the Senate seat once held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Roy Moore, a Republican firebrand, said claims that he preyed on a teenager while he was a 32-year-old prosecutor were "completely false".

Although Moore's statement says that the story was fabricated and is "intentional defamation", there is no mention that he intends to take legal action.

Alone with Corfman, Moore chatted with her and asked for her phone number, she says.

Moore prevailed over several Republican opponents in a closely contested primary that saw US President Donald Trump, McConnell and most establishment Republicans back the incumbent, Luther Strange.

Moore's name can not be removed from the ballot before the December 12 special election even if he withdraws from the race, according to John Bennett, a spokesman for the Alabama secretary of state. As both she and her mother recall, he said he would watch over her while the mother went into court for a child custody hearing. Per Alabama law, it is too late for Moore's name to be taken off the ballot. "Whatever this is, just get it over". During a second visit to Moore's home, Corfman told the Washington Post, Moore removed his and her clothes, touched her over her underwear, and guided her hand to do the same over his "tight white" undergarments. "I don't recuse for every criminal that comes up, and I'm not comparing criminality with this conduct, but if somebody that commits a murder comes up before my court, I'm not going to recuse them, because that's against what I believe, and it's also against the law" - Moore in a 1990s court opinion, as CNN reported.

Among the handful of Senate Republicans who have endorsed Moore, only Mike Lee of Utah weighed in on the allegations.

Moore was removed as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court twice - once for refusing to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments he had installed in the state courthouse, later for barring clerks from issuing same-sex marriage certificates following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized them.
