Iran Displays Missile To Mark Anniversary Of US Embassy Seizure

A surface-to-surface missile was on full display as thousands gathered at the former USA compound, the first time such weaponry has been on display during the annual event.

Later in the day, the semi-official Tasnim news agency, which has ties to the elite Revolutionary Guard, said the missile was a Qadr-F that has the same range.

Shamkhani also noted that the countries that have supported the US's anti-Iran stance over the past years were themselves at a loss.

Soon after the 1979 revolution, when hard-line students seized the embassy and took 52 Americans hostage for 444 days, Iran and the United States severed diplomatic relations.

Trump's administration has taken a tougher line with Iran, threatening to tear up an worldwide accord on its nuclear programme.

Demonstrators, mostly students, waved flags and signs, some which read "Stop Terrorism" and "Shut up Trump", to show their discontent toward the hardline stance taken by the USA government.

In the capital city of Tehran, the rallies to mark the anniversary of the landmark move are held at the venue of the former United States embassy, which is known by Iranians as "Den of Espionage". State television said similar celebrations were being held in other Iranian cities and towns.

The US Congress must now make a decision regarding the nuclear deal, which saw Iran agree to limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

In an address to the Saturday rally in Tehran, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said that the US's foreign policy had failed.

Mr Shamkhani, alluding to Mr Trump's threats against North Korea, said even U.S. allies know that Mr Trump "has no power to realise his bluffs, against Iran, too".

Tensions between the United States and Iran have risen again, at a time when Tehran has been improving political and military ties with Russian Federation.

Hundreds of thousands of Iranian people, mostly school and university students, staged demonstrations on Saturday morning all over the country to express their opposition to the arrogant policies and attitudes of the enemies, particularly the US. Many Iranians call it the "den of spies".
