It's a breach of etiquette by a former president, but George H.W. Bush did not mince words when describing Donald Trump. "And I'm not too excited about him being a leader", he said, according to CNN's report. After Carter said Trump was being given a hard time by the media, the latter thanked him by tweeting his thanks for the "nice remarks ..." He criticized Trump for his lack of humility, which he said was a guiding force among the Bushes: "As you know from looking at my family, it is a certain heritage, that's what they expect, and we're not seeing that".

The book also revealed that George H.W. Bush doesn't like Trump and called him a "blowhard" when he was running for president.

Mark Updegrove, the author of the book, talked to both Bushes on the record and they made it clear a year ago they were none too happy about the former reality television star becoming president.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, neither former president endorsed Donald Trump. It also highlights ideological divisions within the Republican Party.

He had just defeated Jeb Bush - the former president's son.

The book is titled The Last Republicans and in it, Updegrove takes a look at what is now seen as the bygone era of the GOP establishment.

Once the bombastic billionaire real estate magnate secured the Republican nomination, Bush expressed surprise and anxious about Trump's lack of humility, and thus his inability to recognize his own limitations and surround himself with more knowledgeable people.

Neither of the two Republican former presidents voted for Mr. Trump - the father voted for Hillary Clinton and the son voted for "none of the above", as he told Mr. Updegrove.

"If one presidential candidate can disassemble a political party, it speaks volumes about how strong a legacy its past two presidents really had", a White House official told CNN.

Both Bush presidents went on the record to give Mr Updegrove their candid assessment of Mr Trump, as well as rare insight into their thoughts on the 2016 presidential race as the drama unfolded.

"The Last Republicans" is set to be released on November 14.

The elder Bush spent eight years in Ronald Reagan's administration as vice president and four years in the oval office as president, while the younger Bush was president for eight years.

Speaking to the George W Bush Institute, he said: "Bigotry seems emboldened". George HW Bush said he voted for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, while his son told Mr Updegrove he did not vote for anyone.
