Massive government recall covers 37.8 million Kidde fire extinguishers

The company urged consumers to consult their extinguisher's model number, serial number and date code and cross-check the device with the recall list and fill out a form.

Emergency crews couldn't get the extinguisher to work. Nozzles can also pop off "with enough force to become "a risky projectile", according to CBS News".

There have been almost 400 reports of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment, including the case of the fatality, about 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns, and roughly 91 reports of property damage.

The recall affects between 37 and 38 million extinguishers in the US made from 1973 to this past September.

In response to the recall, Kidde said in a statement that "customer safety is our first priority" and that it working with authorities to "ensure that affected fire extinguishers are replaced as quickly as possible".

The extinguishers may become clogged, which can cause the failure, according to a report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (SPSC).

The recall also covers 134 plastic handle and push-button "Pindicator" models manufactured between 1995 and 2017, the agency said in a recall notice. They were sold in red, white, and silver and are either ABC or BC rated.

If you own a Kidde fire extinguisher, you can check the model number here to see if it's part of the recall, and contact the company for a free replacement if so. They were also sold for use in commercial trucks, recreational vehicles and boats.

The recall FAQ section of Kidde's website says, "No proof of purchase is required".
