Support for marijuana legalization reaches record high: Gallup poll

Support for marijuana legalization reaches record high: Gallup poll

A majority of United States adults - including most Democrats and Republicans - now support marijuana legalization, according to a new survey by Gallup.

The poll found that 51% of Republicans support marijuana legalization, a figure up nine points from a Gallup poll conducted previous year. They have been putting out the same poll since 1969 when only 12% of Americans backed legalization.

Morgan Fox, the director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project, said in a statement Americans are "tired" of wasting resources arresting individuals for using marijuana. In states where medical marijuana is legal, opioid overdoses go down. This is the highest approval rating marijuana legalization has ever reached in a Gallup poll.

Marijuana is illegal at the federal level but eight states - Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Colorado, Alaska, Maine, Massachusetts - and Washington, D.C., have fully legalized recreational-use pot.

Of course, we're all ignoring the more interesting point here - that, between 2016 and 2017, Republicans polled by Gallup on legalizing marijuana jumped "up nine percentage points". The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions may want to shut down the marijuana industry, but apparently linking it to violence or claiming that "good people don't smoke marijuana" is not making a convincing enough case for the American people.

As Gallup notes in its analysis of the data, there are many similarities between the trend that we've seen in this polling and the polling on the issue of same-sex marriage that showed support for marriage equality increasing at a more rapid pace over a very short period of time. In the case of marriage equality, numerous changes in the law came through court rulings that found the laws against same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional and it was ultimately a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court that led to the legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide. Sessions could have an uphill battle in shoring up support for his anti-marijuana crusade if he cannot even count on his own party. "That bodes well for efforts to pass cannabis laws in more states in 2018 - both on the ballot and through state legislatures".
