Gujarat OBC leader Alpesh Thakore to join Congress

"This agitation was not of Hardik Patel's alone".

Not to be left behind in the race for Gujarat, the Congress appealed to Patidar leader Hardik Patel to join forces with the party against the BJP. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the best bet for the ruling BJP will also be rushing to Gujarat on Sunday. Thakore met Gandhi at the latter's residence this evening and was accompanied by Congress general secretary in-charge of Gujarat Ashok Gehlot and state unit chief Bharatsinh Solanki.

Top state BJP leaders besides Shah have addressed OBC meets in Gujarat.

"I am very happy that Mr Thakor had a meeting with our Vice President and agreed to join the Congress party". "We stand by our proposal of keeping 49 per cent reservations for OBC, SC/ST intact and passing a resolution in the Assembly once in power to provide for 20 per cent reservations to other communities", he had said. Mr Vasava had supported Congress in the Rajya Sabha elections held in August. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will be in Gujarat on October 23 where Mr Thakor is expected to join the party. "We are also ready to give him a ticket if he wants to fight elections in the future", Solanki said. I can not contest elections myself because of constitutional provisions, nor do I want. "Unemployment is a huge problem with lakhs of youngsters without jobs, more than 74,000 farmers are neck deep in debt, illicit liquor flows freely in the state despite prohibition and education and health sectors are in a total mess", Thakor said, adding, "Me, Hardik Patel and Jignesh are all going to join hands with the Congress party to defeat the BJP". The minimum age required for a person to contest an Assembly or Lok Sabha election in is 25. He said the people have only two options - the BJP or Congress.

For Congress, the proposed front with its caste combination looks impressive on paper.

Mr Thakor rose to prominence after the Patidar agitation led by 24 year old Hardik Patel demanding OBC status and quota benefits for the Patidar community in the state.
