Trump to allow release of thousands of JFK files by National Archives

Donald Trump intends to authorise the release of "classified" files relating to the assignation of 35th US President John F. Kennedy, ignoring concerns from officials.

"Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened", Trump said in a tweet.

Trump said Saturday he would approve the release of those top secret documents.

Republican members of Congress, including Senate judiciary committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, of Iowa, have urged Trump to allow the full release of the documents.

After Kennedy was shot to death during a Dallas, Texas, parade on November 22, 1963, a commission led by Chief Justice Earl Warren was formed to look into assassination. Over the years, the National Archives has released most of the documents, either in full or partially redacted. His social media post comes on the heels of reports that he meant to block the release of the files - set to be made public in less than a week by the National Archives. During the campaign he suggested the father of rival Sen.

"No reason 2 keep hidden anymore", Grassley tweeted earlier this month.

Actually, the release of the CIA and Federal Bureau of Investigation documents has been scheduled for a quarter of a century by law (the Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act), but according to reports, some in the intelligence community had suggested keeping at least some of the documents under wraps for national security purposes, a power the President has.

Gerald Posner, author of the book Case Closed, which argues that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination, told CNN the most revealing files to be released involve circumstances around Oswald's trip to Mexico City seven weeks before the shooting in Dallas. One per cent of the records are completely secret.

Trump caveated the decision as being "subject to the receipt of further information".

Posner said that the conspiracy theories about the Central Intelligence Agency and mob working together to assassinate a head of state are true - but the target was Cuban leader Fidel Castro, not Kennedy.
