Gunman Kills Ten In Kabul Shiite Mosque

Late last month, a bomber detonated an explosive device outside another Shia mosque in Kabul, killing at least six people.

Major General Alimast Momand says the attacker was on foot and walked into to the Imam Zaman Mosque on Friday in the city's Dashti Barch area where he detonated his explosives.

The explosion occurred at around 6:30pm when the worshippers were doing the evening prayer.

He said the suicide bomber blew himself up among the worshippers.

According to an eyewitness, women and children were also among the victims of the attack. Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish told Khaama Press 39 people died and at least 45 people sustained injuries.

Ghani pledged that Afghan security forces would step up the fight to "eliminate the terrorists who target Afghans of all religions and tribes".

"We do not know many were killed and wounded".

Many people were chanting slogans against insurgents outside the mosque few hours after the attack.

Mohammad Iqbal Nizami, the spokesman for the provincial chief of police, says the bomber struck during Friday prayers, killing 33.

The president said the attacks were aimed at creating division among the people, adding that these nefarious acts will not yield any result and will not affect the unity of Afghans.

On Aug. 25 a similar attack at the same Shia mosque in Kabul was claimed by pro-Daesh militants.

On Tuesday, at least 41 people were killed and scores were injured in an attack on police headquarters in the Paktia provincial capital of Gardez, located in eastern Afghanistan.
