Twin Taliban attacks at Afghanistan army base kill dozens

In addition to the fatalities, the attack wounded at least 24 others, according to a security source quoted by Tolo News.

"Unfortunately there is nothing left inside the camp".

"We think the militants used an explosive-packed Humvee vehicle to detonate the gate of the base and we are looking to see if there was more than one", Waziri said. "They have burned down everything they found inside".

Ministry spokesman Dawlat Wazeri told RFE/RL that six soldiers were unaccounted for after the attack on the Afghan National Army base in the Maiwand district early on October 19.

Ten insurgents died, the ministry said.

"We have sent a delegation to assess the situation".

Maj. Gen. Nauman Zakaria, the commander for the South Waziristan tribal region, told reporters during a visit to the border that after the fencing is complete, no "terrorist" will be able to use Afghan or Pakistani soil to launch cross-border attacks.

On Tuesday, at least 69 people were killed and scores wounded in Taliban attacks on government compounds in Paktia and Ghazni provinces.

The wounded were taken to hospital, deputy public health director Hedayatullah Hameedi said.

Two other attacks on security forces Wednesday claimed lives - as The Washington Post reported, "Taliban fighters killed nine police officers late Wednesday in the western Farah province during attacks on police posts there and killed six policeman in an ambush in the northern Balkh province".

"Chief of our Jamaat-ul-Ahrar Omar Khalid Khorasani, who sustained serious injuries in a recent United States drone strike in Afghanistan's Paktia province, succumbed to his injuries Wednesday evening", spokesman Asad Mansoor told AFP news agency by telephone.
