Canadian rock legend Gord Downie dies at 53

A statement on the band's website said he died Tuesday night "with his beloved children and family close by".

Downie's work also led to him being appointed a member of the Order of Canada in June of this year; he was hailed by Governor General David Johnston for his devotion to "promoting dialogue about residential schools and working towards reconciliation". "His response was to spend this precious time as he always had - making music, making memories and expressing deep gratitude to his family and friends for a life well lived, ".

"The fact he did that last tour speaks phenomenally about the man who loved his fans so much and cared so much about the people that loved him that he just wanted to go out with one last hurrah", said Sattler. "He showed the rest of the world that we are a place of unity and inclusion, which is good", said Smith.

The concert was broadcast live and viewing parties were held across Canada.

Downie's interest in First Nations advocacy came to the fore during the a year ago of his life, aided by Secret Path, but he previously wrote numerous The Tragically Hip songs that concerned themselves with First Nations issues, including Now the Struggle Has a Name (2009) and Goodnight Attawapiskat (2012).

One of the country's most revered singer-songwriters, Downie penned a steady stream of 1990s rock radio staples including "New Orleans Is Sinking", "Blow at High Dough", "Courage", "Ahead By a Century" and "Bobcaygeon".

Its discography sold more than eight million copies, appealing to partiers and intellectuals alike. We'd like to hear from you about this or any other stories you think we should know about.

"Nor have I written any pro-Canada lyrics, any kind of jingoistic, nationalistic cant".

"Social causes are quite obvious".

"If you're a musician and you're born in Canada it's in your DNA to like the Tragically Hip", Green said.

"Honouring arguably the greatest frontman in Canada rock "n" roll history in our own little way is something most citizens will very much appreciate", said Jason Farr, Ward 2 councillor.

Tributes flowed across the country Wednesday, including from First Nations communities.

Toronto Mayor John Tory tweeted that the Toronto sign will be lit in red and white and dimmed Wednesday evening in honor of Downie. Last month, meanwhile, Long Time Running, a documentary about the band, was debuted and Downie announced his latest solo LP, "Introduce Yerself", would be arriving on October 27.
