Micromax Launches Bharat-1 4G Feature Phone With BSNL At Rs 2200

Micromax Launches Bharat-1 4G Feature Phone With BSNL At Rs 2200

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is now offering unlimited calling and data for Rs 97 per month for users of Micromax's 4G VoLTE enabled Bharat phone.

With this, both the companies are targeting at the 500 million plus population that yet to be connected to the internet.

Jio had in July announced a 4G feature phone for Rs 1,500, returnable at the end of three years for a full refund. Essentially, the Bharat 1 comes bundled with a Rs 97 BSNL Unlimited Plan, in which users get unlimited calling hours, unlimited data, free roaming and free SMS, with a one-month validity.

As per the specifications the Bharat-1 sports a 2.4-inch display and is powered by an entry-level Qualcomm Snapdragon processor coupled with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB of internal storage.

The "Made in India" Bharat-1 is a dual-SIM capable feature phone.

The Bharat 1 supports 22 Indian languages, a preloaded Micromax Entertainment app for Live TV, music, movies and videos streaming. The Bharat 1 comes with a 2000mAh battery. The CMD of BSNL, Anupam Shrivastava commented on this matter, "We are proud that we are partnering with Micromax, a home-grown player on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras".

The new feature phone also comes bundled with a BSNL SIM card, but like the JioPhone (which is now restricted to the Jio network only), Bharat 1 is not restricted to BSNL's network only, it can be used on any other network operator also including Airtel and Reliance Jio if they want to use 4G VoLTE services.

According to Rahul Sharma, co-founder, Micromax Informatics, the Bharat 1 phone will cost customers less than JioPhone down the line. Connecting the last mile- to the Internet and relevant information - is an important part of the strategy for both BSNL and Micromax.

Nevertheless, Micromax and BSNL's Bharat 1 is expected to face tough competition from Reliance Jio and Airtel. As for the pricing, the Micromax Bharat 1 will be sold at just Rs. 2,200. Data affordability, connectivity and ease of using technology are the three barriers for the users to get a connected experience.
