Mr Putin described the talks in Moscow as "substantive and meaningful".

Additionally, Russia's state atomic corporation Rosatom and the Saudi Energy Ministry signed a nuclear energy cooperation accord.

"This is a landmark event", Mr Putin said in televised comments before the meeting at the Kremlin's opulent St Andrew's Hall.

He added that a balanced oil market, reduction of inventories to a normal level and the return of oil investments is the aim of the world's largest oil exporter.

King Salman reviews an honour guard.

The King concluded his speech by officially inviting the Russian president to visit the Kingdom and to continue consultations towards the issues of common interest and enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries in all fields.

Saudi Arabia's Military Industries Corporation said the agreement is "expected to play a pivotal role in the growth and development of the military and military systems industry in Saudi Arabia".

Mr Putin hailed the visit from the king - the first sitting Saudi monarch to visit Russian Federation - as a "landmark event".

Saudi Arabia's energy minister said that Russian Federation has helped to breathe new life into OPEC and that shale can be a major contributor to the market in years to come.

Saudi Aramco is discussing several investment opportunities with Russian firms but there are no current plans to take a stake in Novatek's liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, Aramco Chief Executive Amin Nasser said on Thursday. Mr Putin has said the zones are vital for ending the conflict.

The two have profound disagreements on Syria - where more than 330,000 people have been killed since war erupted in 2011 - and Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition has been bombing Houthi rebels since 2015, drawing criticism from Moscow.

Mr Lavrov said Russian Federation supports Saudi efforts to unite splintered rebel groups in Syria in a bid to pave the way for peace talks to bring an end to the war. Saudis are due to stage another meeting of the Syrian opposition in Riyadh in the middle of the month in a bid to unify the Syrian opposition and restructure its political demands.

Addressing a plenary session of the Russian Energy Week, which kicked off in Moscow on October 3, he said the two countries share fundamental interests, including energy policies, fighting cybercrime, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, anti-terrorism efforts and dealing with regional conflicts.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the two leaders had a "friendly and substantial discussion based on a desire by Moscow and Riyadh to consistently grow mutually beneficial partnerships in all spheres".
