Myanmar ready to take back Rohingya refugees

Myanmar ready to take back Rohingya refugees

"The access we have in northern Rakhine state is unacceptable", Mark Lowcock, head of the United Nations humanitarian office, told reporters in Geneva.

Under pressure, Myanmar has set up a working group with Bangladesh to facilitate the return of Rohingyas which Bangladesh calls "forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens".

With the influx of people showing no signs of stopping, Bangladesh said on Thursday it would build one of the world's biggest refugee camps.

Haque's position runs contrary to New Delhi's stance that Rohingya refugees in India pose a national security threat amid fears of radicalisation.

Millions of Rohingya Muslims have fled the conflict-hit Rakhine state to Bangladesh and India after the escalation of tensions following a military crackdown.

Communities in Chittagong share close cultural, religious and linguistic ties with the Rohingya, and images on social media purportedly showing abuses against the Muslim minority in mainly Buddhist Myanmar have aroused strong sympathy in Bangladesh.

Observers believe that as many as 100,000 more people may be waiting to cross to the southeast Bangladeshi port of Cox's Bazar from Myanmar's Rakhine state, the International Organisation for Migration said, citing staff members monitoring the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

"Not that it always becomes (a security threat), depends on how you manage it". But because of the security situation, reporters say they are not able to freely move about the area and gather information.

"If they treat us as equals, we would go back", he told AFP in a coastal town near the border.

The Bangladesh Foreign Secretary said there is a tendency to view such issues from the prism of radicalisation, but that obfuscates the fact that it is above all a humanitarian issue, involving women and children who "need support".

On a one-day visit organised by Myanmar authorities, United Nations officials, diplomats and aid groups were flown by helicopter to Maungdaw, epicentre of the violence.

The lawmakers also echoed comments by the U.N. Human Rights commissioner, saying that the violence against Rohingyas which has led to their mass exodus constitutes ethnic cleansing.

In a new report released Friday, Refugees International described the actions of the Myanmar military as "crimes against humanity". To add to it, Haque said that Bangladesh had given a written proposal to Myanmar on the repatriation of the immigrants.
