British PM vows to make home ownership a dream for young

London [U.K.], Oct 5 (ANI): British Prime Minister Theresa May's speech at her Conservative Party's annual conference on Wednesday was interrupted by a serial prankster who handed her a P45 (unemployment notice), an incessant cough, and some problem with the backdrop.

"I think she should call a leadership election", Mr Shapps told BBC Radio 5 live.

Theresa May tried to make light of her persistent cough throughout her keynote conference speech with a light-hearted tweet surrounded by cough medicine.

He said he had previously informed No 10 that a growing number of Tory MPs were keen to have a leadership election.

While 61-year-old May's own Cabinet has rallied around her, Shapps accused them of trying to overlook a series of blunders that made May's leadership of the party and the country untenable.

The prime minister's speech, which was meant to rally the Tories after weeks of in-fighting, was interrupted by comedian Lee Nelson (real name Simon Brodkin) who handed May a fake P45.

Mr Shapps, who chaired the party between 2012 and 2015, said up to 30 Conservative lawmakers backed the bid to tell Ms May to go, including five former cabinet ministers.

"She showed an unbelievable degree of resilience and courage this week, of a piece with the fantastic leadership she has shown through the time that she has been Prime Minister", he told the Today programme.

There is also anger at Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, whose recent outbursts on Brexit policy dismayed colleagues for overshadowing the Tory conference in Manchester, according to one senior Conservative official.

Comedian Simon Brodkin managed to get on camera at the front of the stage and hand the prime minister the termination of employment tax form, and said "Boris asked me to give you this", before being ejected from the hall.

A leadership contest could also pave the way for an election that some Conservatives worry could be won by Corbyn, whom they cast as a Marxist seeking to impose a socialist fantasy on Britain.

"I wouldn't buy a used vehicle from one embittered colleague - let alone take advice from him about who should be PM", he said.

She said: "I led the campaign, and I am sorry".

She also apologised to activists calling the snap election and losing the Conservatives' majority. "Obviously she was having difficulties, but what we saw was her tenacity", Stephen Kerr, a Scottish member of parliament, told AFP.

The Prime Minister also said it will invest an additional £2 billion (S$3.6 billion) in affordable housing - taking the total affordable housing budget to nearly £9 billion.
