This Is Why Abortion Needs To Be Legal Worldwide

In countries where abortion is banned or only allowed to protect a woman's health, only 25% of abortions were deemed safe.

They say women may die as a result of more serious complications because of the unsafe methods used to bring about an abortion - and their health services may then not have the skills or resources to treat them.

When abortions are performed in accordance with World Health Organization guidelines and standards, the risk of severe complications or death is negligible it said. An estimated 25.1 million unsafe abortions were performed worldwide each year between 2010 and 2014, with the vast majority occurring in developing countries, according to a study published online September 27 in The Lancet.

This means the procedure was conducted by a trained professional who used an outdated abortion method, or a newer method was used (for instance, drugs like mifeprisone and misoprostol) but without adequate medical support. An additional 8 million abortions veered into the "least safe" category, using what the Guardian calls "desperate and unsafe backstreet measures", including everything from "ingestion of caustic substances" to "insertion of foreign bodies".

WHO's research examined abortion data from 2010 to 2014, finding that Africa was the most unsafe place for abortion procedures with only a quarter of all procedures being safe, and almost half falling into the "least safe" category.

The percentage of the world's unsafe abortions that occurred in developing countries. Dr. Ganatra told The Guardian that the takeaway is the importance of "ensur [ing] access to safe abortions to the full extent of the law, particularly in low income regions of the world". Overall, the vast majority of "less safe" and "least safe" abortions take place in Africa, Asia and Latin America - areas that tend to have the most restrictive laws. In these countries, 49.5% of abortions were unsafe.

It's never been easier to have a safe abortion. Less than one in four abortions in Africa, excluding Southern Africa, were safe.

The research offers evidence that women around the world continue to have abortions even when they live in areas where trained providers are scant and where the procedure is illegal.

A separate study found that in 2012 nearly 7 million women were treated for complications of unsafe abortions in the developing world.

The number of "least safe" abortions.

Unsafe abortion occurs when a pregnancy is terminated either by persons lacking the necessary skills/information or in an environment that does not conform to minimal medical standards, or both. "Progress towards safer abortion is needed, even in some developed countries". Similarly, it can be extremely hard for doctors to distinguish between complications caused by miscarriage and induced abortion.

Every year, an estimated 55.7 million abortions are performed worldwide.

The database aims to promote greater transparency of abortion laws and policies, as well as to improve countries' accountability for the protection of women and girls' health and human rights.
