IOS 11 deals a blow to Uber's creepy location tracking habit

IOS 11 deals a blow to Uber's creepy location tracking habit

Apple's latest update to its iOS software, the operating system that underlies the iPhone and iPad, returns to Uber customers some control over access to their locations. iOS 11 mandates that all apps that request the ability to track users' locations give them the ability to limit that tracking to just "while using the app". In an update in 2016, Uber chose to restrict an existing location privacy option that iPhone users had previously been enjoying.

The ride-sharing company came under fire this year when a policy change forced iPhone users to decide whether the app was "always" or "never" tracking their location.

By default, Apple allows for three levels of location permissions for apps. The change to its app benefits even those users still running older versions of iOS; those running iOS 10, for example, will be able to opt out of always-on location tracking too.

At the time, though it saw Uber criticized in the media, such a decision was permitted under Apple's developer policies.

If you want to disable the prompts on your iOS 11 device, all you have to do is go to Settings iTunes & App Store and scroll down to the In-App Ratings & Reviews toggle. Apparently the company has now managed to overcome that issue and restore it, with Federighi promising "we will be bringing it back in an upcoming iOS 11.x update".

The former meant location tracking was enabled even when they were using the app, while the latter practically disabled Uber's Global Positioning System function. You can change it by going to Settings Privacy Location Services Uber.
