Mnuchin: Plane request was about national security

Earlier this week, reports emerged that Mnuchin had requested the use of a government plane for his and Linton's honeymoon.

Treasury has said that Mnuchin's trip, which included a stop to watch the total solar eclipse with Sen.

"I've never asked the government to pay for my personal travel, and this was purely about alternatives of how I'd be able to be involved for national security".

In a statement, the department said the request for a government plane was withdrawn because a "secure communications option was identified" without the use of a government plane.

The department defended Mnuchin, saying he requested the plane so he could keep in contact with government officials while he was away.

Mnuchin, an independently wealthy former Goldman Sachs banker, has already triggered a review of his travel for using government jet to travel to Louisville and Fort Knox, Kentucky last month.

As for the trip to Kentucky-which was so maligned at the time that Linton got into an argument over it with an Instagram commenter-Mnuchin claims he took it discuss tax policy with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and to visit Fort Knox.

One senior Treasury official who has worked with a number of past secretaries said that military aircraft are only used in "extreme" circumstances, such as if the secretary had to be rushed back to a meeting in Washington, D.C., with the President. "This was one of the things we explored".

Mnuchin faced criticism after reports that he wanted a USA aircraft to ferry him and his bride Louise Linton to travel to Scotland, France and Italy last month.

Rich Delmar, counsel to the Inspector General at Treasury, said the IG's office was "looking at all requests for and use of government aircraft" at Treasury. I'm pretty sure we paid more taxes toward our day "trip" than you did.

Linton responded by belittling the woman in a series of comments and even mentioned her honeymoon. Adorable! Do you think the United States govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?!
