Paris to host 2024 Olympics, 100 years since its last Games

The French leader was among the first to offer congratulations to Paris after the International Olympic Committee officially confirmed Paris as the 2024 host, and Los Angeles for the 2028 Games.

The new 2028 report concludes: "From the information submitted, the IOC Evaluation Commission considers that the main requirements for Los Angeles to host the Olympic Games 2028 have been met".

Both Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 officials expressed their excitement at the decision to award their cities the Olympic Games. After the wait of nearly 100 years, Paris has clinched the hosting of 2024 Olympics. The event had no surprising moments as the two cities knew that they would be hosts for the 2024 and 2028 Olympics.

"Bringing the Olympics back home to LA gives us the chance to imagine what our city will look like a decade from now", said Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles.

The IOC members at the 131st IOC Session unanimously approved a so-called tripartite agreement between the cities and the IOC by a show of hands to settle the double awarding, instead of voting for a city in a secret ballot as in the past.

This time, no unpleasant surprises for Los Angeles and Paris.

The Olympic cauldron at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is blazing again, ahead of the expected official awarding of the 2028 Games to LA. "We have the two best possible games for the Olympics in 2024 and 2028, in two great Olympic countries". The 2024 edition will be the 100th anniversary.

Paris, with a Games budget of 6.8 billion euros ($8.09 billion), had failed with previous attempts to land the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

"We can count on higher revenues, increased International Olympic Committee contributions, and an investment of up to $160 million to increase youth sports programmes in LA in the years leading up to the Games".

It wasn't such a bad idea considering the news still seeping out about a bid scandal involving a Brazilian IOC member's alleged vote-selling to bring the 2016 Olympics to Rio de Janeiro.

Both cities are making extensive use of existing and temporary venues and have huge public support, and are planning with budgets of well under 10 billion dollars - modest, especially compared to the estimated 50 billion dollars Russian Federation spent on the Sochi 2014 Winter Games.

"I could not be more happy", he said after the first double allocation since 1921, when Paris won the 1924 and Amsterdam the 1928 Games.
