Pakistan open to joint Afghan border patrols, says PM

The Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said Pakistan is open to joint border patrols with the Afghan forces amid persistent USA pressures on Pakistan regarding the terror safe havens often blamed for the major attacks in Afghanistan.

Mr Abbasi said his government had yet to receive any specific demands from the Trump administration, adding that Pakistan would act on any information shared by United States authorities.

The US President Donald Trump last month announced the new US strategy as he strongly criticized Pakistan regarding the terror sanctuaries, saying "For its part, Pakistan often gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence, and terror".

He denied the accusations that Pakistan supported militant groups as he batted away suggestions that Mr Trump's comments would upend relations between the Cold War allies.

Abbasi urged the United States to show more appreciation for Pakistan's losses in war on terror and its role in hosting 3.5 million Afghan refugees.

Pakistan's Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif is on a trip to Turkey, following visits to China and Iran, to discuss Afghan peace strategy, Abbasi said.

"We have not received any list of measures", he said. Abbasi said that the GSP Plus scheme provided a constructive framework for the betterment of Pakistan's economy and for the promotion of its economic agenda. "We are transparent. We have nothing to hide".

He warned that Washington will not achieve its counter-terrorism aims by "starving" Pakistan of funds, adding that both countries need to make cooperative efforts to win over militancy in the region. "We respect others' sovereignty and expect the same from others".

He said that Pakistan had lost more than $120 billion in the war against terrorism. Pakistan and Afghanistan should work together to overcome the menace of terrorism.

Pakistani officials have been complaining since that Trump's allegations were false.

When asked about U.S. plans to get tough on Pakistan and cutting billions of dollars worth of military and financial aid, the Prime Minister said: "We have nothing to hide, as a general rule you do not punish allies".
