Hurricane Katia strengthens to Category 2

Hurricane Katia strengthens to Category 2

After a week of destruction in the Caribbean, it was clear that Hurricane Irma was one for the books.

Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) is another way that scientists measure a hurricane season using the combined wind energy a storm produces during a set time period.

Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist at CSU specializing in Atlantic hurricane forecasts, tweeted: 'The Atlantic now has 3 hurricanes active at the same time: #Irma, #Jose and #Katia.

HURRICANE Jose was classed as a Category 4 storm and described as "extremely dangerous" as it followed in the path of the ruinous Irma.

Katia, which brought rain to the state of Veracruz when hitting the coast late on Friday, was about 115 miles west northwest of the Gulf Coast port of Veracruz early on Saturday morning, the NHC said. Jose has winds of 75 miles per hour (120 kph) and is quickly strengthening, but poses no immediate threat to land. A tropical storm watch has also been issued for Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Saba, and St. Eustatius.

Klotzbach noted that, at Category 5 strength, Hurricane Irma was the strongest storm on record to impact the Leeward Islands with maximum sustained winds of up to 185 miles per hour.

Jose is heading for the Caribbean and models then show it veering to the north before Puerto Rico.

Residents observe the levels of the Tecoluca River, in Mexico's Veracruz state, after Hurricane Katia. The storm was expected to weaken rapidly over the next day, the NHC said.

Luckily, Hurricane Harvey relief zones should be safe from Katia, as a large swath of dry, sinking air over Texas and Louisiana will keep the system from moving north, according to AccuWeather.
