Hurricane Irma slams Caribbean as Category 5 storm

Hurricane Irma slams Caribbean as Category 5 storm

Jose joins powerful Category 5 Hurricane Irma already pushing into the Caribbean and approaching Florida, and Hurricane Katia, newly formed in the gulf off the coast of Mexico.

Hurricanes Jose hit category one status far east of Hurricane Irma late Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Weaker than Category 5 Hurricane Irma - which has flattened nearly everything in its path as it nears Florida - Jose will likely strengthen to at least a Category 2 storm, forecaster Etienne Kapikian told AFP.

Hurricane Katia is poised to hit eastern Mexico and now has max sustained winds at 75 miles per hour. "Katia is forecast to make landfall somewhere between Tampico and Veracruz, Mexico, late Friday evening or early Saturday morning".

Irma skirted Puerto Rico and left 1 million people without electricity.

A hurricane warning is out for the state of Veracruz, which is predicted to receive 5 to 10 inches of rain.

Hurricane season typically begins hitting its stride in early September, so forecasters are expecting the Atlantic to generate even more hurricanes.

While the Caribbean faces the possibility of being affected by a second major hurricane, Mexico is braced for the arrival of Hurricane Katia.

That string of islands was slammed by Irma Wednesday and the extent of the damage is not yet clear. Hurricane Katia isn't expected to have a direct US impact, and Hurricane Jose is still far out in the Atlantic - but that doesn't mean they aren't making people nervous.

"It now looks like the Hurricane Watch Net will be working on two land-falling hurricanes", said HWN Manager Bobby Graves, KB5HAV.

Hurricane Jose also became a hurricane today with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour. Jose was moving toward the west-northwest near 13 miles per hour (20 kph) and a movement toward the west or west-northwest at a slightly faster rate of forward speed is expected during the next two days.

NOAA said Hurricane Jose is expected to decrease slightly in forward speed in the next couple of days but is expected to strengthen in wind speed in the next two days.
