United Nations probe says Syrian government launched April sarin attack

For example, out of the 179 individuals killed during the chemical weapons attack in Khan Shaykhun and the suicide bombing in Al-Rashidin, 54 per cent of the deaths were of children.
The plane is used only by the Syrian air force.

"We have analyzed all the other interpretations" of who might have conducted the attack, commission chairman Paulo Pinheiro said at a Geneva news conference.

The United States was also cited in the report for what they claim were legal strikes against Al Qaeda militants at a mosque.

The U.S. said they were targeting a meeting of al-Qaeda fighters but the United Nations said they found no evidence of the meeting and that 38 civilians attending a religious service were killed.

"The parties to this horrific conflict must fundamentally realign their tactics with basic notions of humanity, and the worldwide community must reinvigorate its commitment to meaningful justice and accountability for all perpetrators of crimes, if we are to see a significant shift away from Machiavellian disregard for the interests of the Syrian people and the progress towards alleviating the suffering of civilians", said Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, Chair of the Commission.

Locals told the commission that the meetings were "a regular occurrence" and a "religious gathering".

"The United States targeting team lacked an understanding of the actual target, including that it was part of a mosque where worshippers gathered to pray every Thursday", reads the UN report.

US President Donald Trump cited images of the aftermath of the Khan Sheikhoun attack when he launched a punitive strike days later, firing cruise missiles on a Syrian government-controlled air base, from where US officials said the Syrian military had launched the chemical attack.

Syria's opposition must accept that they have not won the six-and-a-half year war against President Bashar Assad, UN peace talks mediator Staffan de Mistura said on Wednesday. It was among four chemical attacks the commission tallied over the span of its investigation - including the use of "weaponized chlorine" in three other locations.

The weapons used on Khan Sheikhoun were previously identified as containing sarin, an odourless nerve agent.

A government warplane dropped sarin on the town in Idlib province, killing more than 80 civilians, the U.N. Commission of Inquiry on Syria said, in the most conclusive findings to date from investigations into chemical weapons attacks during the conflict.

The attack was the latest in a string of chemical strikes since the Syrian conflict began in March 2011. It is unable to physically examine or test bomb fragments as the commission has been denied access to the territory.
