All Indian medallists at World Badminton Championships

"Congratulations." Sindhu's gallant effort to become India's first ever World Champion ended in heart-wrenching defeat against Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in an epic final today. One can jump the gun and say Sindhu may hold the edge considering she has got the better of Okuhara in the last two encounters, but this is a different stage, it is the all-important finals and nothing can be predicted. Sindhu won silver at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where she lost to Spain's Carolina Marin.

Although Sindhu lost the final, for India, it still is a historic edition since for the first time Indian shuttlers are returning with two medals. Stay tuned for the latest updates. Sindhu had, in fact, struggled to make it to the main draw of the singles competition for Rio, but some important points in major events before the Games gave her a spot.

Overpowering the long rallies, the Japanese leveled the lead soon with her strong stamina and won the first game 21-19.

"I am very exhausted", she said. "Everybody aims for gold and I was there very close but that last moment changed everything", she said referring to crucial unforced error at 20-20 in the deciding game.

At 2-2 in the first game, Saina and Okuhara played a tough 32-shot rally where both players targeted the corners. However, Saina became a little lazy after that which allowed the 22-year old to score four points before Saina outplayed the youngster to gain two more points. Saina Nehwal grabbed a bronze on Saturday after losing her semi-final. But Okuhara won her biggest battle against Sindhu on Sunday.

Tensions mounted on the court as the match dragged to the third game.

Saina has to work out ways to compensate for age taking its toll, be inspired by someone like Lin Dan, who at 33 has reached his seventh world championship final. She needs to go back to the drawing board with coach Vimal Kumar or perhaps even with a new set of coaching assistants who can work on a different wrist bend and arm angle to introduce a new flourish to her net play and smashes.
