Cook, Root put England in command against Windies

Root, who made 190 against South Africa in his first match as England captain at Lords last month, pulled off-spinner Roston Chase to fine leg for a ninth boundary that saw him complete his 13th Test century in 139 balls.

James Anderson has struck an early blow after Alastair Cook scored a superb 243 as England dominated the second day of the first Test against West Indies at Edgbaston. Nine of the 11 players in the Edgbaston Test hadn't played a Test in England before - the only exceptions being opener Kieran Powell and fast bowler Kemar Roach.

Opener Alastair Cook remained unbeaten on 153 hitting 23 boundaries with Dawid Malan on 28 (4 boundaries) as England ended the day at 348/3 at stumps on Day-1.

The duo came together after England had briefly been in trouble at 39 for two.

This was Cook's fourth Test Match double-hundred, which saw him at the crease for nearly ten hours.

Thanks to those dismal numbers, West Indies' attraction as a marquee team has dwindled too: what used to be a five- or six-Test series every four years in the English summer has now reduced to two or three matches. There are slight differences and we did practice with the pink ball at different points during the day ahead of the game, to make sure we had all bases covered. The atmosphere was electric and for Cooky to be 150 not out is great.”.

The tourists are still 470 runs behind in this first day-night Test in the United Kingdom and face a battle to avoid the follow-on, with their target of 315 a tough ask against an England attack who are making the pink ball talk. "We were poor. If you are conceding 53 boundaries in a day it shows a lack of discipline", Windies bowling coach Roddy Estwick said.

The Yorkshireman is now just one behind South African AB De Villiers' world record of 12.

But although England still has problems over the makeup of part of its top order, and finding an effective opening partner for Cook, there are no doubts over the lasting value of the current and former captain.

Cook, whose stand with Malan was worth 162, was still there at lunch on 213.

After lunch, Root went to an 83 ball-fifty when a flashing cut off opposing skipper Jason Holder flew through the slips for four.

The reception at the top table is beginning to wear off for Westley, following his inconclusive succession of middling scores so far - the latest his least productive to date after he played across and missed a straight ball to be lbw to first-change Miguel Cummins on DRS. Jermaine Blackwood took his second catch of the day at slip to dismiss Stokes.

The recovery by Cook and Root was made easier by some inconsistent bowling by the West Indies pacemen.
