House blown up leaving other semi standing after suspected gas explosion

The moment a gas blast destroyed one half of a semi and wrecked the other was caught on camera.

But her sister, Tracy Tia Judson, said that Shepherd avoided more serious injury thanks to her fridge.

Northumbria Police tweeted: "Police are aware of an explosion on Rosslyn Avenue, Sunderland".

The huge explosion happened yesterday morning and left a hole where the house used to be.

They were called to Rosslyn Avenue in the Ryhope area of the city just after 9am.

In an earlier post, she said that God must exist as "how the hell can anyone survive that explosion".

Remarkably, she was the only casualty following the explosion at around 8.50am on Friday, and was treated for burns at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Ms Shepherd's daughter was with her father at the time of the blast, the sister said.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed the 2 storey semi-detached building has collapsed following the explosion.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said they have sent five engines and a search dog to the scene, while the Great North Air Ambulance also attended.

Tracey Pounder, 51, said she heard an "almighty bang". He said: "I saw the window move and the house shook".

He's spoken with Sun FM and could only say one word to describe what he's seen - "Shocked!".

Northern Gas Networks said its engineers were at the site and investigating "as a matter of urgency".
