"To help inspire creators and seed the ecosystem, we've also funded some shows that are examples of community-oriented and episodic video series", Facebook said.

A blog post about the new Facebook service stressed that it is organized around "friends and communities". Facebook has said that it is introducing the platform to a limited group of publishers in the U.S.

Further, in order to help the users keep up with the shows that they follow, Watch has created a 'Watchlist'. The "Watch" tab and original shows will start rolling out to a small group of U.S. users tomorrow on mobile, desktop and Facebook's TV apps.

The social media company is also more proactively encouraging creators to upload new videos to its servers, offering a 55% split on ad income in line with YouTube, and - also like the Google-owned video site - providing funding for some original content.

Facebook said the shows would include videos of the Women's National Basketball Association, a parenting show from Time Inc and a safari show from National Geographic. This also renders a more personalised experience to the Watch.

"The newsfeed, which [catered to] autoplay without sound, created this ecosystem of videos that are really different from what most video producers made before Facebook came along with their algorithm", said Solana Pyne, the executive video producer for publisher Quartz. Of course these might be either recorded or live and always aligns to a storyline or theme.

It's a potential threat to Twitter, YouTube, Netflix and other services for watching video. The two companies have been communicating with each other via Facebook Messenger and G-Chat.

Watch will be customised according to what users, their friends and the communities they're part of are consuming, Facebook says - but will also feature sections such as "Most Talked About" and "What's Making People Laugh" to help steer users to shows they might like. "As a programmer, that's incredibly exciting especially when Facebook has said they are going to invest a lot of equity and energy into this". Each show will get a dedicated show page where old episodes will be kept.

"In general, the model here feels very YouTube-like, with a subscription model, though Facebook's apps for TV platforms in recent months have signaled the broad structure and interface, with a combination of videos recommended or liked by friends, things you've saved, things that are popular on the platform, and so on", said Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research. For this reason, YouTube is introducing a new way for content creators to see if their videos are eligible for advertising, and how they are mapped against advertising categories.
